Action for Children in Northern Ireland

Our work in Northern Ireland

We are a national charity that supports and speaks out on behalf of the most vulnerable and neglected children and young people in Northern Ireland. With over 20 services we are based in the heart of local communities. We help thousands of the most vulnerable and neglected children and young people to transform their lives each year and we’ve been doing so for over 15 years, helping more than 8,300 children alone in the last year.

Who we support

The children and young people we support face the most difficult problems in life. Some don’t have the basics, from the love and care of family to regular routines such as mealtimes or the guidance that all children need to grow to be healthy adults.

Others have to overcome physical or emotional challenges that hold them back. We help these children to fulfil their potential by providing services to support their individual needs. We succeed in helping children and young people to overcome difficulties at an early stage to tackle problems before it is too late.

Our services

Our services are located across Northern Ireland and support children and young people in many different ways. Our Sure Start Centre’s in Ballymena, Larne, Downpatrick and Waterside aim to enhance the life chances of young children (0-4 years) and their families by offering high quality play and education activities for parents and children.

We provide a Young Carer’s service to support 8-18 year olds who have a significant caring role through outings and activities, focused group work and one to one support.

Family support services

We also provide Family Support Projects ranging from working intensively with vulnerable families to running parenting programmes and supporting young people with mental health, emotional, learning, behavioural or housing difficulties or those who are living with domestic violence.

Our services

Action for Children Foster Care provides high quality foster placements for children who cannot live with their families.

We offer a family life to children and young people who have experienced early trauma or a disruptive family break down and have possibly experienced multiple placements that haven't worked. Our children and young people are supported by our foster carers until they’re ready and able to live independently.

Being a foster carer is no ordinary job and can be challenging as well as highly rewarding.

If you join our team, we will be with you every step of the way, offering you all the help and advice that you need to be the best foster carer you can be.
